Welcome to A Better Photograph

Photography is such an exciting field right now. The technology is changing rapidly, and the medium is more accessible than ever before. This website is a resource for both amateurs and aspiring photo enthusiasts looking for clear direction for improving their images.

The articles are here. They include information on the basics of composition, lighting, and technique. And you’ll find tips on taking pictures of your newborn, your favorite pet, and vacation spots. All presented in a way that encourages you to explore your own creativity.

There are wonderful resources to further your education. You can find recommendations for books here. They include suggestions about technique, and vision.

Two other areas to check out are the tools, where I have recommended products I’ve found to be of value for photographers, and reviews, where I give you my opinions based on hands-on experiences with equipment.

Because I want this to be as vital a community as possible, A Better Photograph's Flickr Group has been created so you can ask questions, get answers, and upload pictures for comments. Check it out.

And if you have any questions or comments please contact me at allen@abetterphotograph.com.

About Allen Birnbach

I’ve had the great fortune to work and play as a photographer for over thirty years. Originally drawn to the fine art side of the business, I moved into the commercial world to pay for my personal projects. It’s been a move I’ve never regretted, as the challenges of shooting assignments feeds back into a higher level of understanding in my own work. I’ve worked for American Airlines in London, Bristol-Myer Squibb in New Zealand, and Dii in China. I’ve photographed members of the Iceland Dance Company in bubbling mud pots outside Reykjavik and dog teams in the Iditarod race in frozen Alaska. Each experience has added to my immense love for the medium. You can see more of my work, a client list and an artist resume at http://www.allenbirnbach.com and at http://www.birnbachimages.com.

Over the last five years, along with shooting assignments and several personal series, I have brought that passion of the medium to teaching photography. I’m an instructor at UCLA Extension in Los Angeles, the Panasonic Digital Photo Academy and Working with Artists. It’s because of the tremendous fun I’ve had with these venues http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif that I’ve decided to expand the teaching to an online environment. Enjoy!
